What is a Doula
A Doula (the word originates from the Greek word to serve) is a qualified,
Non-medical birth companion trained and experienced in childbirth. A doula is knowledgeable in the skills of relaxation, massage, breathing, birth positions and the ability to create a calm atmosphere in which encourages and enhances a natural and easy birth.
A doula, usually a mother herself, does not replace a qualified Midwife, Obstetrician, or Partner. The purpose of a Doula is to provide one-on-one physical and emotional support, assisting couples to understand the process and options surrounding natural birth. A doula is non judgemental in her approach to childbirth, respecting the choices of the birthing mother and her partner.
A Doula believes that childbirth is a natural process and encourages the birthing mother to have confidence and belief in her ability to give birth in a calm and comfortable environment with ease and peacefulness.
The choice to hire a Doula ensures that the mother has constant support. Research strongly indicated that Qualified Doula support can result in:
- 50% reduction in caesarean rates
- 25% shorter labour
- 60% reduction in epidural requests
- 40% reduction in oxytocin
- 30% reduction in analgesia use
- 40% reduction in forceps delivery

- Better Mother ~ Infant bonding
- Deeper bond between Father, Mother & baby
If a doula were a drug, it would be unethical not to use it.
